ZC Greenlights Madhevere and Mavuta for Comeback

Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) has allowed Wessly Madhevere and Brandon Mavuta to return to playing cricket after they finished their four-month suspensions for using drugs. The ban came after both tested positive for a recreational drug during a test in December.

During their suspension, Madhevere and Mavuta had to train with ZC’s high-performance program and were fined 50% of their salaries for three months starting January 2024.

Both players passed drug tests after their suspension.

They last played for Zimbabwe in December 2023 against Ireland and had one match each in the Logan Cup for Mashonaland Eagles and Mid West Rhinos before their suspensions.

I am happy to welcome Wessly and Brandon back to cricket after they completed rehab and passed drug tests,” said Givemore Makoni, ZC managing director. “They admitted their mistakes and are committed to staying clean and focusing on their cricket careers.

No news yet on batter Kevin Kasuza, who was also suspended in January for using a banned recreational drug.

Davis Murwendo, a ZC academy player, tested positive for a social drug in recent tests and will have a hearing soon.

ZC’s anti-drugs program is voluntary and separate from ICC and World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) rules.

ZC goes beyond ICC and WADA rules with our in-house drug testing program,” said Makoni. “This initiative provides education, counseling, and treatment to help players involved with social drugs.
