Why Is the BCCI Opting for the IPL 2025 Mega Auction Abroad?

The IPL 2025 mega auction is set for November 24 and 25, with Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, emerging as the leading candidate to host the event. Jeddah is also in the running, while other locations like Dubai, Singapore, London, and even Vienna have been explored as potential venues.

But why is the BCCI determined to hold the auction outside India this time? Historically, mega auctions have taken place within Indian borders, but this year’s scheduling conflict has prompted a change of plans. IPL 2025 mega auction coincides with the opening Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, which kicks off on November 22. If the auction were held in India, the overlap would create logistical challenges for everyone involved.

Avoiding a Clash with the BGT Test

Moreover, the India-Australia Test match will be broadcast on Disney Star, which is also one of the official IPL broadcasters. To prevent any clash between the two major events, the BCCI has decided that relocating the auction to Riyadh makes the most sense. If the auction does indeed take place in Riyadh, it is scheduled for the afternoon according to IST, allowing the Test match to proceed without interference as it nears its conclusion.

The decision by the BCCI reflects a strategic approach to ensure that both events receive the attention they deserve while prioritizing the interests of Indian cricket fans. By avoiding a conflict, the board aims to maximize viewership and maintain the excitement surrounding both the IPL auction and the highly anticipated Test series against Australia.
