Rohit was asked about his plans for the 2027 World Cup during an event at the Global Fintech Fest in Mumbai on Thursday. The 38-year-old veteran batter gave a brief but clear response, indicating that he is not thinking too far ahead at this stage.
“October 2027 is far away, we will see about it then,” Rohit said when asked whether he would play in the tournament.
The 2027 ODI World Cup is scheduled to be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Rohit’s comments come amid ongoing speculation about his international future after he retired from both T20I and Test cricket. However, he remains available to represent India in the ODI format.
Rohit was also asked whether India could have an open-bus parade in Mumbai if they win the 2027 ODI World Cup, similar to the celebrations that followed their 2024 T20 World Cup triumph.
“I do not think a bus parade would be possible now,” he replied.
BCCI Secretary Backs Rohit Amid Speculation
Meanwhile, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has backed Rohit and questioned why there is continued speculation over the batter’s ODI future, pointing to his recent performances for India.
Rohit played an important role in India’s ODI series against England earlier this year. In his final match of the series, he produced a stunning 138-run innings, strengthening his case for continuing in the 50-over format.
Saikia highlighted Rohit’s performances while speaking to reporters after the BCCI’s review meeting.
“He is playing superbly in all matches. So what more do you want? In the last match against England, he scored 138 runs, so why is there speculation?” Saikia said.
With the 2027 ODI World Cup still more than a year away, Rohit’s latest comments suggest that he has no immediate plans to announce his decision. For now, the veteran opener appears focused on taking things one step at a time while keeping his options open for another potential World Cup campaign.
