Former England cricketer Michael Vaughan did not hold back in critiquing CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, questioning his captaincy and the team’s overall strategy. Vaughan highlighted the lack of ideas and variety in CSK’s bowling attack.
“Teams struggling like CSK are all running around in the field. They are clueless about where to be. The captain is waving his arms all the time. They’ve got some players that aren’t fiery. Their bowling attack will travel because it lacks mystery,” Vaughan told Cricbuzz.
CSK’s golden era under MS Dhoni saw the team thrive with Dhoni’s masterful captaincy, which Vaughan noted as the key difference between the current side and previous champions.
“When they’ve been winning this tournament, they’ve had the greatest captain that’s ever played T20 cricket [Dhoni] behind the stumps. He waved his paddles around and then went in at No.6 or 7 and won games of cricket. Their bowling is the real concern, and hence the struggles of the top three,” he added.
Ahead of the 2026 season, CSK made headlines by trading in Sanju Samson from the Rajasthan Royals in exchange for star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. They also invested in young talents like Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma, each acquired for INR 14.20 crore, strengthening a core of promising players including Noor Ahmad, Dewald Brevis, Anshul Kamboj, and Ayush Mhatre.
Vaughan expressed surprise at CSK letting Jadeja go, emphasizing the value of his experience in guiding the younger squad.
“It’s surprising they allowed Jadeja to go to RR. Jadeja offers you so much with his experience. He is a big loss in terms of experience for that group. When you are trying to bring in younger players, you need real core experience. You can’t just have core experience with the bat. You need it with the ball as well, and someone like Jadeja is a big loss in the group,” Vaughan said.
Chennai Super Kings will look to bounce back when they face Delhi Capitals at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on April 11.
