James Anderson may be retiring after the first Test between England and West Indies, but he reminded everyone that true class is timeless on Day 2 of the match. After England secured a 250-run lead in the first innings, Anderson came back to bowl and struck early, dismissing West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite as a stunning inswinger. Though Anderson had taken only one wicket in the first innings, this exceptional delivery was a fitting highlight for his remarkable Test career.

Bowling the ninth over of West Indies’ second innings, Anderson’s ball dipped low and swung back in towards the right-handed Brathwaite, completely deceiving him. The wicket marked Anderson’s 702nd in Test cricket.

Top class from James Anderson. Finally, the good bowlers will find a way through,

commented Ian Bishop from the commentary box.

Anderson struck again later in the day, claiming his 703rd wicket by dismissing Alick Athanaze. By the end of Day 2, West Indies were struggling at 79/6, facing an imminent innings defeat.

With only four wickets remaining, Anderson could not surpass Shane Warne’s tally of 708 Test wickets to become the second-highest wicket-taker. Muttiah Muralitharan remains the leader with 800 Test scalps.

Atkinson Shines in Anderson’s Farewell Match

As Anderson prepared to bid farewell, another pacer made a stunning entrance into the world of Test cricket. 26-year-old Gus Atkinson, making his debut, stole the spotlight by tearing through the West Indies batting lineup, claiming seven wickets in the first innings.

Atkinson’s extraordinary debut performance helped England bowl out the Windies for a mere 121 runs. In response, England posted 371 runs, thanks to half-centuries from Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, and fellow debutant Jamie Smith.

Atkinson, who was picked up by Kolkata Knight Riders for IPL 2024 but did not play and eventually withdrew from the squad, has now made a memorable mark in Test cricket.
