Star opener Virat Kohli once again stole the spotlight with his trademark intensity and passion during RCB’s crucial clash against Punjab Kings at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala on May 17. RCB secured a commanding 23-run victory, becoming the first team to officially qualify for the playoffs.
Kohli was visibly charged up throughout the high-stakes encounter, constantly energising his teammates, celebrating wickets with animated gestures, and staying heavily involved in field placements and on-field discussions. His aggressive body language and emotional celebrations added to the intensity of the contest.
With the bat, Kohli also delivered a key contribution at the top of the order. After RCB were put in to bat, he anchored the innings with a fluent 58 off 37 deliveries, striking four boundaries and three sixes at a strike rate of 156.76. His innings provided stability after an early setback and helped set the platform for a strong total.
He was well supported by a blistering knock from Venkatesh Iyer, who remained unbeaten on 73 off 40 balls, smashing eight fours and four sixes at a strike rate of 182.50. The duo’s efforts powered RCB to an imposing 222 for 4 in their 20 overs. For Punjab Kings, Harpreet Brar was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2 for 35.
In response, Punjab Kings lost momentum early as RCB’s bowling attack struck regularly during the powerplay. Despite a counter-attacking half-century from Shashank Singh, who made 56 off 27 balls with four fours and four sixes, the chase never fully recovered.
Rasikh Salam Dar impressed with the ball, claiming 3 for 36, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar supported with two crucial wickets to keep Punjab under pressure. PBKS eventually finished on 199 for 8, falling short as RCB wrapped up a statement win.
With this victory, RCB not only confirmed their playoff berth but also reinforced their status as strong title contenders this season.
