The Women’s Premier League is currently in its fourth edition, with squads refreshed through new signings and player movements across franchises. Royal Challengers Bengaluru Women, the 2024 champions, are currently leading the points table. The Mumbai Indians sit close behind RCB due to a superior net run rate, while MI, UP Warriorz, and Gujarat Titans are all level on points with two wins each from five matches.

Vaishnavi Sharma earns maiden WPL contract

Mumbai Indians were forced into a change after G. Kamalini was ruled out of the remainder of the season due to injury, though the franchise has not disclosed specific details. As her replacement, MI have roped in the 20-year-old Vaishnavi Sharma for INR 30 lakh, marking her debut WPL contract.

Vaishnavi rose to prominence after playing a key role in India’s triumph at the U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup, where she emerged as one of the leading wicket-takers. She has since made her senior international debut for India, picking up five wickets in five matches at the highest level.

Before her injury, Kamalini scored 75 runs off 77 balls for Mumbai Indians this season, with a highest score of 32 against RCB. As a wicketkeeper, she also contributed with seven dismissals.

Australia tour on the horizon

Both Vaishnavi Sharma and G. Kamalini made their senior India debuts against Sri Lanka last month, just ahead of the WPL. The upcoming tour of Australia is expected to be a crucial assignment for the Indian team.

The two teenagers have earned their maiden ODI call-ups and will be part of the Indian squad traveling to Australia. Meanwhile, players such as Shreyanka Patil and Bharti Fulmali have also returned to the Indian T20I setup following impressive performances in the ongoing WPL season.
