Steyn, who has faced both Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli during his playing days, made the bold claim while speaking in an interaction ahead of SA20 Season 5. He said Sooryavanshi’s talent is so exceptional that he could surpass two of the greatest names in cricket history.
“You think of guys like Sachin, Virat, and this kid is going to explode. He’s going to be bigger than both of them put together at the end of his career,” Steyn said.
Sooryavanshi has reportedly grabbed global attention with his outstanding performances in the IPL 2026 season, where he emerged as one of the standout young performers and earned major accolades. His rapid rise has also led to a maiden India call-up for the T20I series against Ireland and England, as well as selection for upcoming multi-nation assignments.
Despite acknowledging the abundance of young talent worldwide, Steyn insisted that Sooryavanshi stands out as a “different level” of prospect compared to most players currently in international cricket.
“There is no shortage of talent in South Africa, but this kid is different. He’s better than most international players right now. A genuine boy wonder,” Steyn added.
However, the former South Africa pacer also urged caution in managing the teenager’s career, warning that improper handling could derail his progress.
“With great responsibility comes great reward, but there’s also a risk you could lose him along the way if he isn’t handled properly,” he said.
Steyn concluded by noting that while South Africa continues to produce strong young players, none at present match the rare potential he sees in Sooryavanshi.
