The Caribbean side currently sit 10th in the ODI rankings and cannot climb into the automatic qualification positions before the September 30, 2026 cut-off. Even winning their remaining two ODIs against India would not be enough to move West Indies into the top eight.
Under the qualification system, the eight highest-ranked teams on the cut-off date, excluding hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe, will earn direct entry into the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Afghanistan recently secured their automatic qualification after defeating Ireland in a thrilling ODI in Belfast. They join Australia, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, England and Bangladesh among the teams already assured of direct qualification.
West Indies face another qualification battle
West Indies have endured a difficult period in ODI cricket and now face another qualification challenge. They missed direct qualification for the 2023 ODI World Cup and subsequently finished fifth in the Super Six stage of the Qualifier, ruling them out of the 2025 Champions Trophy as well.
Ireland have also been confirmed for the 2027 Qualifier as the other lowest-ranked non-host Full Member at the September 30 cut-off.
When will the 2027 World Cup Qualifier take place?
The 2027 ODI World Cup Qualifier is scheduled to be held from February 22 to March 23, 2027, although the host venue has not yet been announced.
Ten teams will compete in the tournament. West Indies and Ireland will be joined by four teams from Cricket World Cup League 2 and four sides progressing through the World Cup Qualifier Playoff.
The Qualifier Playoff will feature the four lowest-ranked League 2 teams and four nations emerging from the Challenge League. The exact format of the playoff is yet to be finalised.
West Indies’ only route to the World Cup
The Qualifier now represents West Indies’ only pathway to the 2027 ODI World Cup, which will be co-hosted by South Africa and Zimbabwe.
The winner of the Qualifier will earn direct entry into the second round of the World Cup. Teams finishing second, third and fourth will advance to a Super Series first round, with the top side from that stage also progressing to the main tournament.
West Indies, who lifted the World Cup in 1975 and 1979, must now successfully navigate the qualification route if they are to return to cricket’s premier 50-over tournament.
