Gujarat Titans’ New Era: Torrent Group Takes Over Ahead of IPL 2025
The Indian Premier League (IPL) is no stranger to big-money deals, and the latest shake-up is set to make waves. Torrent Group, a major player in India’s business world, is set to acquire a 67% majority stake in Gujarat Titans (GT) from CVC Capital Partners. The deal is pending final approval from the IPL governing council, but if all goes as planned, Torrent will take charge in time for the IPL 2025 season, which kicks off on March 21.
Gujarat Titans’ Meteoric Rise
Since their debut in 2021, Gujarat Titans have made an instant impact. CVC Capital Partners purchased the team for INR 5,625 crore (about $750 million), and in their very first season in 2022, GT—led by Hardik Pandya—went all the way to lift the IPL trophy. They nearly repeated the feat in 2023, finishing as runners-up, but their 2024 campaign was less impressive, landing them in eighth place.
Despite the recent setback, GT remains a force to be reckoned with. Their home turf, the Narendra Modi Stadium, is the largest cricket venue in the world, packing in over 100,000 passionate fans—a fortress that could play a crucial role in their resurgence under new ownership.
Torrent Group Finally Joins the IPL
For Torrent Group, this acquisition is the culmination of years of effort to break into the IPL scene. Back in 2021, they bid aggressively for a new franchise, offering INR 4,653 crore for Ahmedabad and INR 4,356 crore for Lucknow, but lost out. They tried again in 2023 with the Women’s Premier League (WPL), only to face another setback.
This time, though, they’ve secured their spot. By taking over Gujarat Titans, Torrent Group has officially entered the world of IPL, with Jinal Mehta—son of chairman emeritus Sudhir Mehta—leading the charge.

A Star-Studded Squad with Shubman Gill at the Helm
As Torrent Group steps in, Gujarat Titans remain a powerhouse team, now under the captaincy of India’s young batting sensation, Shubman Gill. The squad boasts world-class talent, including Afghan spin maestro Rashid Khan, England’s explosive batter Jos Buttler, and India’s pace spearhead Mohammed Siraj.
With new ownership and fresh energy, the Titans have a golden opportunity to bounce back and reestablish themselves as IPL heavyweights in 2025. All eyes will be on Gill and his squad as they look to bring glory back to Ahmedabad.
