TNCA receives proposal to host Big Bash League season opener in Chennai

Earlier this month, a Cricket Australia delegation met with TNCA officials to discuss staging the BBL opener at M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in December. The delegation included BBL representatives and CA functionaries, notably Head of Business Operations Phil Rigby and Head of Competition Development and Strategy Margot Harley.

The TNCA has referred the matter to the BCCI, as no official clearance has been issued yet. A final decision will be made once the BCCI reviews the proposal. As of February 17, the board has not responded.

“We have heard their proposal and are fully aware of our jurisdiction. The TNCA has left the matter to the BCCI. We have made it clear to the Australian delegation that without BCCI approval, the plan cannot move forward. The ball is in the BCCI court,” a TNCA official told Cricbuzz.

The move by CA is seen as an effort to expand the BBL’s reach and capitalize on the lucrative Indian market, with at least two of the eight franchises reportedly set for sale.

While it is not yet confirmed which franchises would play in India if approved, the Perth Scorchers are the likely candidates due to their favorable time zone — only two-and-a-half hours ahead of Indian Standard Time — and the Western Australia Cricket Association’s openness to offers from Indian business groups. Being the defending champions also makes the Scorchers a logical choice for the season-opening match, although the BBL does not traditionally start with the previous season’s champions.
