The 23-year-old underwent emergency surgery for an abdominal issue in Rajkot on January 7, while preparing with his domestic team Hyderabad for a Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26 match. He has since been discharged and is currently recovering at home, with plans to return to Hyderabad on January 9. The BCCI stated that Varma is “stable and recovering well.”

Return Timeline and World Cup Implications
While Tilak Varma will miss the first three T20Is scheduled between January 21 and 31, his availability for the final two matches will be assessed based on his recovery progress. The BCCI added that he will resume physical training once all symptoms have “fully resolved,” keeping his preparation for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in mind.

Varma recently gave fans a hopeful update on social media, suggesting he is already on the road to recovery and expects to return to the field “sooner than” anticipated.
