The 36-year-old, who represented Bangladesh in 70 Tests, 243 ODIs and 78 T20Is between 2007 and 2023, clarified that his immediate goal is to secure a director’s post. Only after achieving that would he consider running for the presidency in the future.
Presidency Not an Immediate Target
Speaking about the BCB election process, Tamim explained that the structure requires directors to be elected first before any presidential vote can take place.
“It would be foolish to say I want to be president now. If the presidency were a direct election, I could say whether I am running or not. That will be decided after the board of directors is elected,” Tamim told Bengali daily Kalerkantha.
He added that if he gains enough support later, he may consider a presidency bid. “For now, I want to become a director first. The rest will be seen later.”
Tamim, who is Bangladesh’s highest ODI run-scorer and the second-highest Test run-getter, also urged stakeholders to prioritize competence over politics.
“All stakeholders say cricket should be free of politics, but the reality is different. Instead of smearing each other, the main question should be: who is the best candidate to take Bangladesh cricket forward?” he stressed.
Focus on Infrastructure Development
Outlining his plans if elected, Tamim emphasized the urgent need to improve cricket facilities and infrastructure in Bangladesh.
“What does Bangladesh cricket need most right now? Facilities. Players and coaches exist, but infrastructure is lacking. Even during BPL or DPL, seven teams practice on the same ground,” he pointed out.
Tamim noted that while the BCB is among the world’s wealthiest cricket boards, it still lacks world-class facilities. His vision, if elected, would be to develop proper infrastructure within four years, ensuring Bangladesh cricket is well-prepared for the next 8–10 years.
