According to a BCCI source, consistent performances in domestic competitions could earn the 35-year-old another opportunity in India’s T20I setup.
“The doors for Suryakumar Yadav are still open. He is not currently in the scheme of things, but he remains eligible to return if he consistently scores runs in domestic cricket,” a BCCI source told Deccan Chronicle.
Suryakumar’s omission comes after a disappointing run of form for both India and the Mumbai Indians. Despite captaining India to the 2026 T20 World Cup title on home soil, where they defeated New Zealand in the final, the right-hander struggled for consistency in the IPL 2026, managing just 270 runs at an average of 20.76.
India’s transition under new captain Shreyas Iyer has also been challenging. The defending T20 world champions suffered a 2-0 series defeat to Ireland—their first-ever bilateral T20I series loss to the Irish side—before enduring a 4-0 whitewash against England, which also saw India surrender the No. 1 spot in the ICC T20I rankings.
Even so, the selectors have continued to back Shreyas as captain, retaining him for the upcoming T20I tour of Southern Africa, while Suryakumar has also been overlooked for the three-match series against Zimbabwe.
For Suryakumar, the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy is now expected to play a decisive role in his comeback hopes. Representing Mumbai, the middle-order batter will have the opportunity to force his way back into contention, with his team’s campaign beginning against Hyderabad on November 14.
A strong domestic season could prove to be the key to reviving Suryakumar’s international T20 career.
