Amidst the ongoing debate surrounding Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s potential inclusion in the T20 World Cup 2024 squad, the series against Afghanistan, marking their return to T20I cricket after 14 months, offers a glimpse into the Indian cricket team selectors’ future plans. Scheduled in November 2022, this comeback raises questions about their T20 World Cup selection, but cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar is advocating for their inclusion, even if their IPL 2024 performance is ordinary.

In a recent discussion with Star Sports, Gavaskar emphasized the significance of their experience in the T20 World Cup, making a case for their selection based on their overall contributions rather than just IPL form.

The IPL form will be crucial because that will be the current form. The Afghanistan series takes place in January. The World Cup is in June. So whoever has good form in March, April, and May should be given consideration first. Along with that, even if Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have an ordinary IPL, but they score runs there, you cannot score runs in every match,

Gavaskar explained.

Acknowledging the sporadic nature of scoring runs, Gavaskar suggested a unique approach:

Suppose they make good contributions in five out of 14 matches, you will have to take advantage of their experience, and you can probably pick them in the team.

In an out-of-the-box suggestion, Gavaskar proposed taking them along with the team, even if they are not in the playing 15, citing the confidence boost their presence in the dugout could provide.

I would also say that it’s an out-of-the-box suggestion; you can take them along with the team as well if you cannot pick them in the 14 (15), because of their experience. If Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are in the dugout, imagine what will be the team’s confidence,

he added.

While Kohli will miss the first T20 international against Afghanistan for personal reasons, Gavaskar’s unconventional proposal hints at a broader role for the experienced duo beyond their on-field contributions.
