Tristan Stubbs achieved a significant milestone for the Test team when he became the 11th batter in the history of South African first-class cricket to reach a triple century. Stubbs, currently the top run-scorer in Division 1 of the domestic four-day competition, secured this feat with two centuries in five matches.

Having recently made his Test debut against India and showcased his potential during a tour of Sri Lanka, Stubbs faced a challenging Test at Newlands, scoring 3 and 1 in a two-day match that South Africa lost by seven wickets. Despite contractual obligations to play in the SA20 instead of the Test series in New Zealand, Stubbs had a successful tournament and emerged as the leading run-scorer for Sunrisers Eastern Cape.

In a recent match against Kwa-Zulu Natal Inland, Stubbs batted for eight hours and 19 minutes, scoring an unbeaten 302* as Warriors declared on 517 for 3. This superb performance demonstrates his capacity to play for extended periods of time. Although Warriors and KZN Inland may not make it to the final, Stubbs’ achievements have garnered attention.

Mondli Khumalo made a comeback to the team after recovering from injuries caused by an assault in the UK in February 2022. He took the only wicket in the match, bowling 25 overs and finishing with figures of 3 for 92, signifying his return to action for the home team.

Stubbs may end up representing South Africa in all formats as we go along, leveraging his T20 success and potential future ODI opportunities. With South Africa’s upcoming Test series in the West Indies and Bangladesh, Stubbs may play a crucial role in the middle order, especially with the retirement of Dean Elgar and potential changes in the batting lineup.
