Baartman picked up the injury while representing the Dolphins in their opening red-ball fixture of the domestic season against the Titans. He bowled only five overs during the match, which the Dolphins lost by an innings and 60 runs, and did not bat in the second innings.
A fitness update on Baartman was expected on Sunday, September 13. His potential absence would be another blow to South Africa’s pace department, with Kagiso Rabada already ruled out of the ODI series due to a hamstring issue.
Lungi Ngidi, another member of South Africa’s ODI squad, also left the field during the Dolphins’ second innings and did not bowl again, adding to the team’s fitness concerns ahead of the Australia series.
Meanwhile, several South Africa ODI squad members impressed in the opening round of domestic red-ball matches. Captain Temba Bavuma scored 91 and 9 for the Lions, while Ryan Rickelton struck his 19th first-class century. Tristan Stubbs, Kyle Verreynne and David Bedingham also featured among the notable performers.
South Africa are scheduled to face Australia in three ODIs on September 24, 27 and 30, with Baartman’s fitness now being closely monitored ahead of the series.
