South Africa Names Champions Trophy Squad: Nortje and Ngidi Make Comebacks After Injuries

South Africa is set to compete in Group B of the Champions Trophy, kicking off their campaign against Afghanistan in Karachi on February 21. They’ll face Australia in Rawalpindi on February 25 and conclude their group stage with a match against England on March 1.

Fast bowlers Anrich Nortje and Lungi Ngidi make their returns to the squad after long injury layoffs. Nortje, who hasn’t played in the 50-over format since September 2023 due to a back stress fracture, missed both the 2023 ODI World Cup and South Africa’s home series. Ngidi has been sidelined since October 2024 with a groin injury.

Temba Bavuma will captain the 15-member squad, which retains 10 players from the group that reached the semi-finals of the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. The selectors have maintained a strong core while integrating fresh talent into the lineup.

“This squad boasts a wealth of experience, with many players who have thrived under high-pressure situations,” said South Africa’s white-ball head coach Rob Walter. “That kind of experience is invaluable in a tournament like this. We’ve kept the core of our 2023 World Cup squad and added fresh talent to strengthen the team.

“Our recent performances in ICC events show we’re capable of reaching the latter stages. Now, we aim to take the next step and win the silverware. We’re also excited to have Imraan join our support staff to bolster our batting and continue improving as a unit.”

Klaasen Penalized for ICC Code of Conduct Breach

Before the Champions Trophy, South Africa will prepare with a tri-series against New Zealand and Pakistan from February 8 to 14.
