In a major setback for Indian cricket, star batter Shubman Gill is unlikely to recover in time for the upcoming white-ball series against South Africa. Reports indicate that Gill is now doubtful for the T20I series starting December 9 and is expected to return only next year.
Gill sustained a neck spasm during the first Test at Eden Gardens, which led to his hospitalization and ruled him out of the Kolkata Test. Subsequent scans revealed that the injury was more serious than initially assessed.
Initially, selectors had released Gill from the Test squad with plans for him to return for the T20I series while missing the ODIs. However, The Times of India now reports that he is doubtful even for the T20Is. Gill is currently receiving injections and remains under constant supervision of a spinal consultant, with the Board opting not to risk aggravating the injury by rushing his comeback.
With Gill sidelined and Shreyas Iyer still recovering from a spleen injury sustained during the Australia tour, selectors have confirmed that KL Rahul will return as India’s ODI captain for the series starting November 30. Rahul last led India in ODIs in January 2022, coincidentally also against South Africa, and this marks his return to leadership in the format after a two-year gap.
The move underscores India’s cautious approach to player fitness ahead of a busy international schedule, while entrusting a seasoned campaigner like Rahul to lead the side in Gill’s absence.
