Gill addressed speculation about a transition beyond the legendary pair in ODIs, making it clear that both players are very much part of India’s roadmap for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
“The experience that both of them have and the matches that they have won for India, there are very few players who have achieved so much. Players with such skill, quality, and experience are extremely rare in the world. So, in that sense, yes,” Gill said.
This marks Gill’s first public comment on Rohit and Kohli’s ODI roles since taking over the captaincy. Under Rohit Sharma’s leadership, India lifted the Champions Trophy 2025 and were runners-up in the 2023 World Cup, cementing his legacy as one of India’s most successful white-ball captains.
With both Rohit and Kohli having retired from T20Is and Test cricket, ODIs are now the only format they represent India in. Neither has played competitively since IPL 2025, but both are expected to return later this month for India’s upcoming ODI series against Australia. Kohli is currently in London, while Rohit is in Mumbai, with both set to join the squad in New Delhi ahead of departure for Australia on October 15.
