Star Indian batter Shreyas Iyer is set to receive a BCCI central contract as he gears up for the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka, which begins in August.
Iyer, who captained an IPL-winning team, has been absent from international cricket since the India vs. England Test series earlier this year. The appointment of Gautam Gambhir as India’s head coach has brought significant changes to the team’s selection process for the upcoming series.
The BCCI is preparing to announce the squad for both the ODI and T20I formats against Sri Lanka soon, with several players expected to be included.
Shreyas Iyer Set for a Comeback:
Iyer played in the first two Test matches of the India vs. England series in February but was sidelined for the last three due to persistent back issues. His absence from domestic cricket led to his removal from the BCCI’s central contract.
Despite being declared fit by the BCCI medical team, Iyer opted out of Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy games due to back spasms. This unexpected decision resulted in his omission from the central contract.
However, reports from the Indian Express suggest that Iyer is likely to regain his central contract and be part of the three-match ODI series.
In his ODI career so far, the Mumbai-born batter has amassed 2383 runs in 59 matches, boasting a strike rate of 101.27. His impressive record includes five centuries and eighteen half-centuries.
