That win sent them to the final, where they narrowly lost to Royal Challengers Bengaluru on June 3.
After the match against MI, during the usual post-game handshakes, Iyer was seen scolding Shashank Singh sharply. Shashank later opened up about being called out by Iyer for his casual attitude during such a crucial do-or-die game — something that nearly cost the team dearly. Despite the harsh words, the two later went out for dinner together.
“I deserved it. Honestly, Iyer should have slapped me. Even my father didn’t talk to me until the final. I was being too casual — walking on the beach when I should have been focused. Shreyas was clear with me, saying he didn’t expect this from me. But later, he took me out for dinner,” Shashank told the Indian Express.

The youngsters see Shreyas as a laid-back leader
Despite being on the receiving end of Iyer’s frustration, Shashank praised his captain’s leadership and said there’s no better captain in world cricket right now. The younger players in the dressing room find Iyer easy to approach, and he’s open to taking advice from teammates when it makes sense.
“From what I’ve seen and heard, Shreyas is the best captain in world cricket today. He gives us freedom and treats everyone equally. No one would say he has an attitude. The youngsters see him as a chill guy. He’s the only captain who says if anyone has a suggestion during the game, come to him. If it’s a good idea, he’ll take it. That’s pretty rare,” said Shashank, who finishes games for PBKS.
