Shamar Joseph, Naseem Shah, and Josh Little Headline Overseas Players for SA20 Auction

Fast bowlers Shamar Joseph, Naseem Shah, Josh Little, and Josh Hull are among the notable overseas players shortlisted for the upcoming SA20 auction. As anticipation builds, nearly 200 players have made the cut for this year’s auction pool, with 115 of them being South African talents.

Leading the charge with the largest auction budget is Paarl Royals, boasting a hefty R11.95 million to spend. MI Cape Town follows closely with R8.275 million, while Pretoria Capitals hold a purse of R4.575 million, all eager to strengthen their squads ahead of the January 2024 start of the tournament.

Big Names and Rising Stars in the Mix

In addition to the talented pacers, experienced international stars like New Zealand’s Martin Guptill, Sri Lankan wicketkeeper-batter Kusal Mendis, and Afghan spinner Qais Ahmad are also set to be auctioned. These players bring a wealth of experience to the table and are expected to attract significant interest from the franchises.

SA20 commissioner and former South African cricket icon, Graeme Smith, expressed excitement about the quality of players set to feature in the auction, highlighting the global appeal of the tournament.

Some of the biggest names in T20 cricket have already signed up for Season 3, and I’m excited to see how teams finalize their squads from this competitive auction pool,

Smith remarked in an interview with ESPNcricinfo.

Auction and Squad Requirements

Each SA20 team is required to have a squad of 19 players, including a minimum of 10 South African players. With the auction scheduled for October 1, teams are looking to secure the best talent available. Paarl Royals have already made a bold move by selecting Dinesh Karthik as their wildcard pick, making him the first Indian player to compete in the SA20. The wildcard system allows franchises to lock in key players ahead of the auction, with all teams except the Super Kings having already made their choices. Super Kings have until December 30 to finalize their wildcard selection.

As the franchises prepare for the auction and the tournament’s kickoff on January 9, the SA20 continues to grow in prominence, attracting top talent from around the globe. With a deep pool of players available, the competition for the title is sure to be fierce, as teams vie to build championship-winning squads.
