Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal Could Feature in Bangladesh’s Champions Trophy 2025 Campaign
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President has hinted that star players Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal might be considered for the Champions Trophy 2025, provided they haven’t officially retired.
In a report by Cricbuzz, BCB President Faruque Ahmed suggested the board would evaluate player availability closer to the tournament. “We have just completed a series, and the boys will now play in the BPL, so we have time. We haven’t discussed this yet but will address it when the time comes,” he said.
Faruque added, “If a player hasn’t retired, they are available for selection. As for Shanto’s captaincy, we’ll decide after December.”
Shakib’s Situation
Shakib Al Hasan’s case appears more complex. Currently unable to return to Bangladesh due to political controversies tied to his involvement with the now-defunct Awami League party, Shakib also faces scrutiny over his bowling action, having been banned from bowling in international competitions following an ECB suspension.
“Shakib’s situation hasn’t changed. During the West Indies tour, he wasn’t in the right mental state to play. Whether he’ll participate in the BPL or any other competition is something only he can confirm,” Faruque stated.
Tamim’s Comeback
Meanwhile, Tamim Iqbal has been preparing for his return through domestic tournaments. His strong performances in the ongoing NCL T20, including two fifties, suggest he still has plenty to offer.
“As for Tamim, it depends on the selectors. If he hasn’t retired and the team requires him, the selection committee will engage with him,” Faruque said.

The BCB also faces uncertainty regarding long-term leadership. Najmul Hossain Shanto, who stepped in as captain, has expressed reluctance to continue in the role. He reportedly agreed to stay on only at the request of the BCB President.
As the Champions Trophy 2025 approaches, the BCB has significant decisions to make, both regarding the squad and the captaincy.
