Former player Shahid Afridi reacted to Pakistan’s elimination from the 2024 T20 World Cup by saying Babar Azam should have supported Shaheen Afridi when he was named T20I captain.

After Pakistan’s exit from the 2023 ODI World Cup, Babar stepped down from captaincy, and Shaheen was appointed as the T20I captain. However, after losing a series against New Zealand 4-1, Shaheen was replaced by Babar as captain by the Moshin Naqvi-led PCB.

On his YouTube channel, Afridi discussed the captaincy change and said Babar should have supported Shaheen, enhancing his own respect and setting a positive example.

Afridi also noted that the selection committee shared some blame, as some selectors publicly doubted Babar’s captaincy skills.

Pakistan lost their first two World Cup matches to the USA and India, making it hard to qualify for the Super 8. They won against Canada but needed Ireland to beat the USA. However, rain in Florida resulted in a no-result match, giving both teams one point and securing the USA’s place in the Super 8, ending Pakistan’s chances.
