As India and England geared up for Day 4 of the second Test in Vizag, a notable setback for the hosts unfolded. Opening batter Shubman Gill was absent from the field and replaced by substitute fielder Sarfaraz Khan due to an injury to his right index finger.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) medical team decided to keep Gill away from fielding duties, and the Indian team formally communicated this change to the match officials before the commencement of play on Monday.

Although Gill’s absence might not significantly impact the ongoing match, considering India’s completed batting innings in both sessions, there is a sense of concern for the Indian camp. Gill had shown a return to form in the match, making his potential absence a point of apprehension for the team.

Providing insights into the situation, the BCCI released a statement ahead of Day 4, stating, “Shubman Gill hurt his right index finger while fielding on Day 2. He won’t be taking the field today.” The extent of Gill’s injury remains to be seen, and the Indian team is hopeful that it doesn’t sideline the promising batter for an extended period.

On Day 3, Shubman Gill staged a remarkable comeback to form, notching up his third Test century and breaking free from a challenging streak of poor scores spanning 12 innings.

Addressing the media during the post-day press conference, Gill emphasized the significance of his innings at the number 3 batting order, especially after the early dismissals of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma on the third day. Expressing satisfaction with his performance, Gill highlighted the importance of building a substantial lead and maximizing the run count for the team.

Reflecting on his recent struggles, the 24-year-old batsman asserted that he did not succumb to pressure after a series of low-scoring outings in previous Test matches. He acknowledged the inherent nature of the game, where success and criticism coexist, emphasizing the need to stay true to one’s playing style.

Gill elaborated on his approach, stating, “I’m someone who likes to assess the situation, play according to it, and take calculated chances, playing percentage cricket.” He emphasized the importance of maintaining authenticity and not deviating from one’s natural game.

Discussing his mindset for the ongoing Test match, Gill emphasized his intention to play in a manner consistent with his past successful performances. Rejecting the temptation to be overly defensive or aggressive, he stressed the importance of staying true to one’s strengths and avoiding unnecessary experimentation.

Despite his impressive century, Gill’s innings concluded when he fell to England debutant Shoaib Bashir while attempting a reverse sweep shot in the 56th over of India’s second inning on Sunday.
