The Rajasthan Royals (RR) stunned many when they chose to retain DhruvJurel for a hefty ₹14 crore ahead of the IPL 2025 season. While Jurel’s immense potential is undeniable, some questioned whether RR could have secured him for a lower price at the auction. However, skipper Sanju Samson has hinted at a bold new plan for Jurel that could justify the investment.
In a surprising revelation during a candid chat on AB de Villiers’ YouTube channel, Samson announced that he would be sharing wicketkeeping duties with Jurel in the upcoming season. This decision marks a significant shift in team dynamics, as Samson, a reliable presence behind the stumps, plans to step back partially to allow Jurel—India’s current backup Test wicketkeeper—to take on more responsibility.
“I haven’t shared this publicly before, but we believe DhruvJurel, at this stage of his career, needs more opportunities as a wicketkeeper in the IPL,” Samson explained. “We had discussions, and I think we’ll split the gloves. I’ve never captained as a fielder before, so it’ll be a new challenge. But I told Dhruv, ‘I understand where you’re coming from, and as the team leader, I want to support your growth by giving you this chance.’”

With Jos Buttler’s departure leaving a void at the top of the order alongside YashasviJaiswal, Samson’s recent form as an opener for India—scoring three centuries in five innings—could see him stepping into that role for RR. Meanwhile, Jurelis expected to bat at No. 5, following the likes of Nitish Rana and Riyan Parag in the middle order.
This reshuffle indicates that RR is looking to maximize their resources while investing in Jurel’s development, setting the stage for an intriguing 2025 season.
