The 26-year-old fast bowler has emerged as one of India’s standout performers in the series, claiming six wickets in the first two matches. Brar announced his arrival on the international stage with a three-wicket haul on debut in the opening ODI at Dharamshala before following it up with another impressive display in Lucknow, where he picked up 3 for 60, including the key wicket of Afghanistan opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz.
Speaking on JioStar, Gavaskar acknowledged that Brar’s domestic and India A records were not extraordinary enough to make him an obvious selection. However, he credited the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee for identifying qualities that statistics alone could not capture.
Gavaskar highlighted Brar’s smooth run-up, excellent rhythm, ability to hit the deck hard, and extract bounce from the surface. He noted that the dismissal of Gurbaz particularly showcased the pacer’s accuracy and ability to trouble batters with steep bounce.
According to Gavaskar, the selectors deserve significant credit for recognizing Brar’s potential and backing him despite modest numbers at the List A and India A levels. He also emphasized the importance of the team management’s support in helping young players settle into international cricket.
Brar’s early success has already strengthened his case for a long-term role in India’s ODI setup, with many viewing him as a strong contender for the squad that will compete in the 2027 Cricket World Cup. His pace and ability to generate extra bounce could prove especially valuable on South African pitches, where the tournament is scheduled to be held.
Meanwhile, Gavaskar also linked Shubman Gill’s outstanding batting form to his growing confidence as captain. The legendary batter explained that captains often rely on instinct when making tactical decisions, and personal form plays a major role in strengthening that confidence.
Gavaskar suggested that when a player is performing well, decisions such as bowling changes and field placements become easier to make. Conversely, poor form can lead to self-doubt and hesitation, affecting leadership on the field.
Gill has enjoyed a remarkable series against Afghanistan so far. The Indian skipper guided his team to victory in the opening ODI with an unbeaten 84 during a rain-affected chase before producing a magnificent 154 in the second match at Lucknow. His performances earned him the Player of the Match award in both games and further reinforced his status as one of India’s premier ODI batters.
