Shakib has been struggling in T20 cricket for a while now, and his recent performances in the T20 World Cup haven’t been great either. He only managed to score 8 and 3 runs in the last two matches. Even in the previous T20 World Cups, he didn’t perform well, scoring 131 runs in six matches in 2021 and just 44 runs in five matches in the last tournament.
In the recent match against South Africa, Shakib scored only three runs during their chase of 114 runs and didn’t take any wickets.
Sehwag suggested that Shakib, being the most experienced player in the squad, needs to step up and perform better. He emphasized that if selected for his experience, Shakib needs to justify it.
“If you are picked for your experience in the World Cup squad, then show it. You’re not Adam Gilchrist or Mathew Hayden. You are a Bangladeshi player… Your strength isn’t in hook-pulls. Play to your strengths, at least stay in the middle,” Sehwag said on a Cricbuzz show.
“During the last World Cup, I felt he shouldn’t have been picked for T20s. The time for retirement came a while ago. As a senior player and former captain, he should be embarrassed by his stats. It’s time he announces retirement from this format,” he added.
