The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has announced that Sarfaraz Khan will captain the Mumbai team in the prestigious All India Buchi Babu Invitation Cricket Tournament.
With Ajinkya Rahane and Prithvi Shaw currently engaged in their commitments in England, Sarfaraz, known for his Test batting prowess, has been given a leadership role. His younger brother, Musheer Khan, is also a part of the 17-member squad.
The team, selected by the senior selection committee headed by Sanjay Patil, features opener Akhil Herwadkar and middle-order batsman Siddhesh Lad, who previously played for Chhattisgarh and Goa respectively.
Mumbai will feel the absence of Rahane, who led them to their 42nd Ranji Trophy title last season, along with Prithvi Shaw and left-arm spinner Shams Mulani.
Sarfaraz’s selection as captain is seen as a natural choice due to his experience and seniority within the team. The squad has undergone a two-week training camp and participated in practice matches in Alur, near Bangalore.
Rahane is expected to return to captain the team for the Irani Cup on October 1. Meanwhile, the start of the inaugural Dr. HD Kanga Cricket League has been delayed due to rain and poor ground conditions.
