Sarfaraz Khan Set to Leave Indian Test Squad; Suryakumar Yadav and Dube Likely to Miss Irani Cup

In a recent development, Sarfaraz Khan is expected to be released from India’s Test squad ahead of the second match against Bangladesh, slated for September 27 at Green Park Stadium, Kanpur. The 26-year-old, who didn’t feature in the playing XI during the first Test in Chennai, may return to represent Mumbai in the upcoming 2024 Irani Cup.

According to PTI, Sarfaraz Khan, still part of India’s Test setup, could be allowed to switch focus to domestic cricket if he remains on the bench for the Kanpur Test. The Irani Cup, scheduled from October 1-5 at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, will see Ranji Trophy champions Mumbai take on the Rest of India (ROI).

While Mumbai awaits Sarfaraz’s return, a BCCI source explained the situation,

He is the only specialist middle-order batter in the squad. Dhruv Jurel is a keeper-batsman, and Axar Patel is an all-rounder. What if we need a concussion substitute? That being said, if the Test ends early, Sarfaraz could still make it to Lucknow in time for the Irani Cup.

Sarfaraz’s first-class career remains impressive, with 4183 runs in 50 matches at an outstanding average of 66.39, including 14 centuries and 14 half-centuries.

Ajinkya Rahane is set to lead Mumbai in the Irani Cup, which will also mark the return of all-rounder Shardul Thakur to first-class cricket following surgery. However, Mumbai will miss their key pacer Tushar Deshpande, who is recovering from ankle and knee surgeries.

Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube are also expected to miss the Irani Cup, as both are scheduled to join India’s T20I squad in Gwalior on October 3 ahead of the series against Bangladesh, starting October 6.
