India’s Under-19 World Cup-winning captain Ayush Mhatre was treated to a once-in-a-lifetime moment upon his return to Mumbai when cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar honoured him with a deeply personal gesture. Following India’s triumphant campaign in Zimbabwe, where they clinched their sixth U19 World Cup title by defeating England in the final, Mhatre met Tendulkar and received the former batting great’s Test jersey from his final series.
The gift carried special significance, with Tendulkar offering the jersey as a symbol of inspiration and a reminder of the journey ahead. The gesture was accompanied by a handwritten note encouraging the young captain to remain focused and dedicated.
“Keep working hard. Focus. Don’t get carried away by people. Keep practising. Focus has to be there. There will be plenty of distractions, whatever they may be,” Tendulkar told Mhatre. He added, “Dear Ayush, wishing you all the success in your career.”
Mhatre shared the heartfelt moment on social media, expressing his gratitude. “I grew up watching you through a screen. Today, I stand at your home, holding a piece of your journey in my hands. Thank you, Sir, for this honour. I will carry this with the same respect you carried Indian cricket for years,” he wrote.
The Indian U19 squad received a warm welcome across the country, celebrating their historic triumph. Mhatre was greeted by family, friends, and neighbours in Virar, while teammate Udhav Mohan received a hero’s reception in New Delhi.
On the field, Mhatre led from the front throughout the tournament, shining in the knockout stages. He scored 62 off 59 balls against Afghanistan in the semi-final and followed it with a composed 53 off 51 balls in the final against England, finishing with 214 runs at an average of 30.57, making him India’s fourth-highest run-scorer in the tournament.
The Player of the Tournament award went to Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who amassed 439 runs, including a sensational 175 in the final, featuring 15 fours and 15 sixes, marking a standout performance in the championship.
