As per an official media advisory from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the CSK skipper was penalised under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which deals with minimum over-rate offences. Since it was CSK’s first violation of the season, the standard fine was imposed.
Gaikwad becomes the third captain in IPL 2026 to be sanctioned for a slow over-rate, as the BCCI continues strict enforcement of timing regulations. Shreyas Iyer, leading Punjab Kings, was earlier fined twice for similar offences, with his second breach resulting in a higher penalty of INR 24 lakh. Meanwhile, Shubman Gill, captain of Gujarat Titans, was also fined for a slow over-rate against Delhi Capitals on April 8.
With multiple such cases already in the early phase of IPL 2026, teams are under increasing pressure to maintain required over-rate standards to avoid further sanctions.
On the field, CSK bounced back strongly after a poor start to the season, securing their first win of IPL 2026. New recruit Sanju Samson starred with a brilliant unbeaten 115 off 56 balls, while support came from Ayush Mhatre and Shivam Dube. In bowling, Jamie Overton impressed with four wickets, while Anshul Kamboj picked up three wickets.
CSK will next face Kolkata Knight Riders on Tuesday, April 14.
