India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, is expected to lead the team in the five-match Test series against England in June. Speculation had been mounting about his future as Test captain following India’s series defeats to New Zealand and Australia. However, after guiding India to Champions Trophy glory, Rohit has reportedly secured the backing of the BCCI and selectors to continue in the role.
BCCI Stands by Rohit for England Tour
According to The Indian Express, the BCCI and the selection committee are confident that Rohit remains the right choice to captain India in the upcoming series. A source close to the discussions revealed that all key stakeholders are aligned on this decision.
“He has shown what he can do. Every stakeholder feels that he is the right candidate to lead the Indian side for the tour of England. Rohit too has expressed his eagerness to keep playing red-ball cricket,” the source stated.

Speculation Around Rohit’s Test Future
Doubts over Rohit’s captaincy gained momentum after he “dropped himself” from India’s playing XI for the fifth Test against Australia. Reports suggested that the selectors were already searching for his successor. However, his leadership in India’s Champions Trophy win may have cemented his position once again.
Back in January, Rohit had dismissed retirement rumors, clarifying that his absence from the XI was due to poor form, not a desire to step away from Test cricket. After India’s Champions Trophy victory, he reiterated that he has no plans to retire from ODIs either.
“There is no guarantee that runs won’t come five or two months down the line. I have seen a lot of cricket. Life changes every second, every minute, every day. I have confidence in myself that things can change, but at the same time, I have to be realistic as well,” he told Star Sports.
With the England tour approaching, Rohit’s leadership will once again be under the spotlight as India looks to bounce back in red-ball cricket.
