Rumors claimed that Kohli and Rohit were avoiding interaction with Gambhir and training separately from the rest of the team, fueling speculation about a rift.
Team India recently won a tightly contested first ODI against South Africa in Ranchi. Despite the victory, reports indicated that the BCCI was unhappy with the alleged tension and was planning a meeting with Gambhir and the two senior players to address the communication issues.
Meeting Called Off
Earlier reports suggested that the Raipur meeting, scheduled ahead of the second ODI, would also discuss the future of Rohit and Kohli in ODIs, as the duo had retired from other formats. However, TOI journalist Gaurav Gupta clarified that no such meeting is planned.
“There is NO such meeting in Raipur, or anywhere else, to discuss any communication issues between the selectors, team management & senior players… or any meeting to discuss the future of senior players in the near future,” Gupta stated.
Origins of the Rumors
Gautam Gambhir took over as India’s head coach in July 2024 after Rahul Dravid’s tenure ended. Around the same time, Rohit and Kohli retired from T20Is but continued playing ODIs and Tests.
Following a string of poor performances against New Zealand and Australia, reports suggested Gambhir asked the senior duo to participate in the Ranji Trophy to prove their form. This reportedly did not sit well with Rohit and Kohli, who announced sudden Test retirements in May 2025.
The pair later made their ODI comeback during the Australian tour. However, chief selector Ajit Agarkar indicated that for future ODI selection, both players would need to feature in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Speculation about sidelining the duo fueled the rumors of a rift with Gambhir, which now appear to be unfounded.
With the BCCI confirming no meetings are scheduled regarding the senior duo, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s ODI futures appear secure for the foreseeable future.
