Riyan Parag Set to Be Named Rajasthan Royals Captain After Previous Leadership Stints

Star all-rounder Riyan Parag is poised to take over as the full-time captain of Rajasthan Royals ahead of the IPL 2026. The decision comes after head coach and director of cricket Kumar Sangakkara interviewed several players, with Parag emerging as the most suitable candidate to lead the Jaipur-based franchise.

With Sanju Samson traded to Chennai Super Kings, the Royals were in search of a new leader. Other contenders included Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel, and Ravindra Jadeja, but Parag’s experience and tactical acumen gave him the edge.

This is not Parag’s first stint as RR captain. During IPL 2025, he led the team in eight matches while Samson was unavailable. Though the team won only a couple of those games, Parag’s batting shone brightly, including a career-best 95 against Kolkata Knight Riders.

Parag also brings extensive leadership experience from domestic cricket, having captained Assam across formats. His fearless and tactical approach, along with strong performances in domestic competitions and the IPL, earned him an India cap, though his career has been intermittently interrupted by a recurring shoulder injury.

As Rajasthan Royals gear up for IPL 2026, the franchise will aim to end their long trophy drought, having last lifted the title in 2008 under legendary captain Shane Warne.

Meanwhile, the Board of Control for Cricket in India is set to announce the official schedule for the 2026 season. Dates are being finalised to avoid clashes with elections in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, home to CSK and KKR, respectively. The tournament is expected to run from late March to late May or early June.
