Major League Cricket (MLC) has pulled off a significant coup with the appointment of former Australian captain Ricky Ponting as head coach of Washington Freedom, marking a pivotal moment in the league’s burgeoning history.
Ponting’s arrival comes amidst growing anticipation for the upcoming second season of MLC in the United States, with the cricketing icon signing a two-year deal to lead Washington Freedom into this new chapter.
Transitioning from his role as coach of the Indian Premier League’s Delhi Capitals and renowned media commentator, Ponting expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity, confirming his discussions with Washington last week and finalizing the move after sorting through logistical details.
I’m extremely excited to be joining Washington Freedom in 2024,
Ponting remarked in a statement.
Cricket is really on the rise in the US, and I’m looking forward to being involved in Major League Cricket.
Reflecting on his new role and the legacy he aims to uphold, Ponting acknowledged the surreal nature of replacing his friend Greg Shipperd but expressed confidence in building upon his groundwork for a successful franchise.
This is a huge coup, not only for Washington Freedom and its partnership with Cricket NSW, but more holistically for Major League Cricket and cricket in North America in general,
remarked Michael Klinger, CNSW Head of Male T20 Cricket and General Manager of Cricket at Washington Freedom.
With Ponting’s illustrious playing career transitioning seamlessly into a coaching journey marked by respect and acclaim, his appointment signifies a significant milestone for cricket’s expansion into new territories, promising an exciting era for Washington Freedom and the broader landscape of American cricket.
