Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has shared his struggles with distributing his signature wine brand, “Ponting Wines,” in India. Launched in 2020, the brand was created in collaboration with his wife Rianna and award-winning Australian winemaker Ben Riggs. The label features four wines that reflect Ponting’s cricketing journey.

In 2023, “Ponting Wines” entered the Indian market through Delhi Duty Free, thanks to his association with the Delhi Capitals’ co-owners, the GMR Group. However, Ponting has revealed that expanding beyond Delhi Duty Free has proven difficult due to complex tax and tariff issues.

“We are slowly entering the Indian market. Distribution is quite complicated due to the many taxes and tariffs involved. We’re in Duty Free because of my connection with the Delhi guys. The GMR Group, who co-own Delhi Capitals, also owns the Delhi International Airport, so we have a presence there,” Ponting said during an appearance on The Howie Games podcast.

The 50-year-old cricketer acknowledged the potential of the Indian market but emphasized the challenges of entering it.

“To cut a long story short, a $10 bottle of wine in Australia is worth 120 bucks at a restaurant in India. We don’t want to devalue our product. We’d have to create special products for that market. There are so many challenges, but eventually, we will enter as there’s such a huge opportunity there,”

he explained.

Ponting’s wine brand is distributed by Calabria Family Wine, based in New South Wales, Australia.

On the professional front, Ponting’s seven-year association with Delhi Capitals ended ahead of the IPL 2025 Mega Auction. However, he will return to the IPL as a coach for Punjab Kings in the upcoming season.
