Ravindra Jadeja Set for India Return as Washington Sundar and Jasprit Bumrah Await Fitness Clearance for Sri Lanka Tests

India’s selectors are expected to finalise the squad for the upcoming two-Test series against Sri Lanka, with several key players awaiting fitness clearance from the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru.

Ravindra Jadeja Set for India Return as Washington Sundar and Jasprit Bumrah Await Fitness Clearance for Sri Lanka Tests

According to Cricbuzz, the selection committee is likely to meet within the next 10 to 36 hours, with the fitness status of Washington Sundar, Jasprit Bumrah, Harshit Rana, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Akash Deep, and Anshul Kamboj expected to be the main talking point. The series is an important part of India’s campaign in the ongoing ICC World Test Championship (WTC).

Washington Sundar’s Availability Remains Uncertain

Among the biggest concerns is Washington Sundar, who is continuing his recovery from a hamstring injury. The spin-bowling all-rounder has become a regular member of India’s Test setup under head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill, making him a valuable option for the spin-friendly conditions expected in Sri Lanka.

While there remains hope that Sundar could be available from the second Test, beginning on August 23, his selection is still subject to medical clearance.

Meanwhile, fast bowler Harshit Rana and all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy are reportedly unlikely to feature in the series, with both players still recovering from their respective injuries.

Bumrah Expected to Be Available

India have also been monitoring the fitness of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who is expected to report to the Centre of Excellence before the squad is announced.

Bumrah has played limited cricket since the IPL and missed the third ODI against England after suffering an impact injury to his left knee while fielding during the second ODI in Cardiff. However, the injury is understood to be a minor setback rather than a long-term concern, and the premier fast bowler is expected to receive clearance for the Sri Lanka Tests.

The BCCI had earlier confirmed:

“Jasprit Bumrah sustained an impact injury to his left knee while fielding in the second ODI in Cardiff. He was unavailable for selection for the third ODI due to reactive swelling in the knee.”

Jadeja Set for Comeback

The selectors are expected to retain the core group that featured in last month’s one-off Test against Afghanistan. Experienced all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who missed that match in New Chandigarh, is likely to make his return and further strengthen India’s spin department.

The selection meeting was originally scheduled for Tuesday, July 28, but reports suggest the committee could instead meet virtually on Monday, July 27, to finalise the squad ahead of the Sri Lanka tour.
