Prithvi Shaw to Leave Mumbai, Requests NOC to Play for Another State: Reports

The 25-year-old batter, once seen as one of India’s brightest young talents, is looking for a fresh start after a challenging period marked by inconsistent performances and off-field issues.

An MCA official confirmed the news to The Indian Express, saying, “He has sought an NOC from us, and we’ll decide on it soon.”

Shaw’s relationship with the Mumbai selectors has been deteriorating for some time, largely due to ongoing fitness concerns. According to reports, two or three state teams have already expressed interest in signing him, and if granted an NOC, he could register with a new team for the 2025–26 domestic season.

Falling Out of Favour with Mumbai
Last year, Shaw was dropped from the Mumbai Ranji Trophy squad after concerns about his fitness and body-fat percentage. The team management had made it clear that unless he improved his fitness, he wouldn’t be considered for selection. As a result, he was also left out of the Vijay Hazare Trophy squad in December 2024.

Struggles in Domestic Cricket and the IPL
Shaw’s recent domestic and IPL performances have failed to revive his reputation. In the 2025 Mumbai T20 League, he managed just 137 runs in five matches, averaging 27.40 with a lone half-century. In the 2024–25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he scored 197 runs across nine matches, averaging 21.88.

Even in the IPL, Shaw struggled to find form. He played only eight matches for the Delhi Capitals in the 2024 season, scoring 198 runs at an average of 24.75 and a strike rate of 163.63. Released by the franchise ahead of the 2025 mega auction, he remained unsold despite setting a base price of ₹75 lakhs.

A Faded Star on the International Stage
Shaw, who announced himself with a century on Test debut in 2018, has only featured in five Tests for India, scoring 339 runs at an average of 42.37. What was once a promising international career now appears to have stalled.
