Indian cricketer Prithvi Shaw is making a comeback after a six-month injury break. He will play for Mumbai in the 2023-24 Ranji Trophy’s fifth round against Bengal at Eden Gardens in Kolkata starting this Friday. Shaw suffered a knee injury in August during a county stint with Northamptonshire and underwent surgery in London. After a three-month rehabilitation, he passed a fitness test by the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru last week.

The 24-year-old faced delays in his return as the NCA’s medical panel required him to endure higher skill-based workloads and intense mobility drills for three weeks before clearing him. Shaw’s last appearance for India was during the Sri Lanka tour in July 2021, and he was part of the squad for the home T20Is against New Zealand last year.

Over the past year and a half, Shaw had a mixed performance. Despite scoring 595 runs in ten innings in the previous Ranji Trophy season, including a remarkable 379 off 383 balls against Assam, his consistency issues persisted into the IPL. He lost his place in the Delhi Capitals XI midway through the season, reflecting on his struggles during the Duleep Trophy in June 2023.

Despite Shaw’s setbacks, Mumbai, the 41-time Ranji champions, lead Group B with three wins in four matches and are likely to advance to the knockout stages.
