Smith, who holds the prestigious Level-4 batting coaching qualification—the highest level in the coaching pathway—will begin his tenure with the opening Test at Headingley on August 19. He replaces Asad Shafiq, who had been serving as Pakistan’s interim batting coach since April 2026. Shafiq will continue to serve Pakistan cricket as a national selector.
The Australian-born coach brings extensive experience from franchise cricket and is already familiar with Pakistan’s cricketing setup, having previously worked with several Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchises, including the Multan Sultans. His prior experience with Pakistani players and domestic conditions is expected to help him transition quickly into the national team environment.
The PCB launched its search for a permanent batting coach in May 2026, inviting applications before finalising Smith as its preferred candidate following a thorough selection process.
Smith’s appointment reflects the board’s determination to strengthen Pakistan’s batting unit, which has struggled with consistency in recent years. His technical expertise and coaching background are expected to play a crucial role in improving the team’s red-ball performances during the challenging England tour.
Pakistan’s three-Test series against England begins at Headingley (August 19–23), followed by matches at Lord’s (August 27–31) and Edgbaston (September 9–13). Smith is expected to join the squad before the opening Test as Pakistan begin preparations for the important overseas assignment.
