New Zealand’s five-wicket victory over Bangladesh yesterday sealed Pakistan’s fate in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, eliminating the hosts from the tournament while securing India’s spot in the semifinals. The Kiwis comfortably chased down 237 with 23 balls to spare, marking their second consecutive win and securing a semifinal berth from Group A.
Earlier, on February 23, Pakistan suffered a crushing defeat against India at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Chasing 242, India cruised to victory with 45 balls remaining, thanks to Virat Kohli’s masterful 51st ODI century. Shubman Gill (46) and Shreyas Iyer (56) provided solid support, while Indian bowlers, led by Kuldeep Yadav (3/40) and Hardik Pandya (2/31), kept Pakistan’s batters in check, restricting them to a subpar total.
Pakistan’s Early Exit Sparks Backlash
Hosting an ICC event for the first time since the 1996 World Cup, Pakistan’s disappointing campaign has triggered a wave of criticism, especially after yet another loss to arch-rivals India. The fallout is already underway, with interim head coach Aaqib Javed likely to be the first casualty. According to PTI, a PCB source revealed that the support staff is also expected to be dismissed.
Speculation is growing that Pakistan may adopt a split coaching model, appointing separate head coaches for red- and white-ball formats. Additionally, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi is expected to consult with the Board of Governors regarding the fate of the national selectors.

Pakistan’s Coaching Shuffle Continues
Pakistan’s coaching instability remains a concern. After Gary Kirsten resigned as head coach last year, Javed was appointed as an interim replacement by PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi. Initially assigned to lead the white-ball squad, he later took charge of the red-ball team as well, following Australian Jason Gillespie’s departure.
Now, with Pakistan’s Champions Trophy debacle, the PCB is set to appoint a permanent head coach and support staff before their upcoming tour of New Zealand from March 16 to April 5. The tour includes five T20Is and three ODIs, marking an important step in Pakistan’s rebuilding phase.
