Nurul Hasan’s Final-Over Heroics Secure Thrilling Last-Ball Win for Rangpur Riders

Nurul Hasan put on an incredible display in the final over of Rangpur Riders’ chase against Fortune Barishal in a Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) match on Thursday, hitting three sixes and three fours to secure a last-ball win for his team.

This remarkable feat now stands as the third-highest score in a men’s T20 last over, following Somerset’s 34 runs in a nine-ball over against Kent in the 2015 T20 Blast (though they lost that match), and Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) 31 against Gujarat Titans in the 2023 IPL.

Nurul came to the crease with Rangpur needing 26 runs from the final over, after Shaheen Shah Afridi and Jahandad Khan had reduced them to just two wickets left by the end of the 19th over. Rangpur’s situation looked grim, especially after Mahedi Hasan was dismissed for obstructing the field. But facing Kyle Mayers’ medium pace, Nurul turned the game around with a sequence of 6, 4, 4, 6, and 4, leaving just two runs needed off the last ball. He hit that final delivery for another six, securing a thrilling win. What had looked like the end of Rangpur’s unbeaten streak turned into their sixth straight victory, leaving them six points clear at the top of the table.

In comparison, the record for the most runs in a men’s T20 last over was set by Somerset on July 10, 2015, when they needed 57 to win against Kent. Pakistani left-arm spinner Abdur Rehman struck three sixes and two fours off Matt Coles’ bowling in the final over, with Coles bowling three no-balls, which counted for two runs each due to tournament rules. Somerset ultimately fell short by 22 runs, despite the dramatic finish.

The second-highest score belongs to Rinku Singh’s explosive performance for KKR in the 2023 IPL, when they needed 29 runs from the last over. After Umesh Yadav took a single off the first ball, Rinku hit the next five balls for sixes, leading KKR to a thrilling victory.
