Ashwin believes that clear communication and a supportive environment from the management could play a crucial role in helping the experienced pair prepare both physically and mentally for the global event in South Africa.
Rohit and Kohli have recently dealt with injury concerns. Kohli has been ruled out of India’s upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan due to a hamstring injury, while Rohit Sharma has only recently returned to full fitness after recovering at the BCCI Centre of Excellence, following a brief injury layoff during the IPL season.
Speaking on ESPNcricinfo, Ashwin emphasized that the mindset of both players will largely depend on how they are valued within the team setup.
“In my experience of how these things pan out, it’s pretty straightforward: if the management wants both of them at the 50-over World Cup in South Africa, and if there is enough energy around it, it’s very much possible to keep them on the park and utilise their experience,” Ashwin said.
He added that uncertainty or mixed signals from management could place unnecessary pressure on the players, especially given their injury histories and workload at this stage of their careers.
“But if there is any doubt, the players will find it harder because at this age, injuries are part and parcel of the game. The body is not the same as it was earlier. So you need a proper plan, proper rehab, and good communication. It’s almost like a partnership between the players and management,” he explained.
Ashwin further stressed the importance of alignment between selectors, coaches, and senior players, saying that mutual trust will be key to success in the build-up to the tournament.
“When players feel backed, they naturally put in double the effort. I see no reason why Kohli and Rohit shouldn’t be part of the 2027 World Cup. They make the team stronger with their experience and ability in those conditions,” he added.
India are scheduled to play around 20 ODIs before early 2027, starting with a series against Afghanistan. Since 2025, Kohli and Rohit have remained among India’s leading run-scorers in the format, underlining their continued importance to the side as the team builds towards the next World Cup cycle.
