Following Bangladesh’s seven-wicket loss to South Africa in the first Test in Dhaka, all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz addressed the frequent comparisons between him and Bangladesh’s cricket icon, Shakib Al Hasan. Often viewed as Shakib’s natural successor, Mehidy humbly downplayed the comparison, recognizing Shakib’s legacy and the unique role he has played in Bangladeshi cricket for nearly two decades.
“Shakib Stands Alone” – Mehidy on Filling Big Shoes
At 27, Mehidy has made impressive strides, particularly with all-round performances that have been instrumental in Bangladesh’s recent successes. However, he was quick to point out that any comparisons to Shakib would be premature.
Everyone says I will take Shakib bhai’s place,
Mehidy shared,
but he is a legend with 17 years of incredible achievements. He batted higher in the order and has been scoring since early in his career. I’ve only begun scoring more consistently in the last year or two, usually batting at No. 7 or 8. Shakib is in his place, and I am in mine. It’s best not to compare,
Mehidy remarked to reporters, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

Rising to Pressure Situations
Talking about his batting, Mehidy revealed that he relishes pressure situations, seeing them as opportunities to contribute when it matters most.
I always try to enjoy pressure; it’s a chance to be a hero for the team. I know that my position is challenging, and if I perform, it could make a real difference. I’m mentally preparing myself to score runs and always looking to improve,
he added.
With the second and final Test approaching, Mehidy Hasan Miraz will once again have the chance to prove his resilience, take on more responsibility, and showcase his growth as a leading all-rounder for Bangladesh.
