Conway won’t play in the upcoming match in Wellington on Thursday because he injured his thumb in a Twenty20 game against Australia last Friday in Auckland, where New Zealand lost the series 3-0. Scans revealed damage to his left thumb, so he’ll miss the first Test. Henry Nicholls is stepping in as a replacement.

“It’s disappointing for Devon to be ruled out on the eve of an important match,” said New Zealand head coach Gary Stead

“He’s a class player batting at the top of the order for us and I know he was really looking forward to this series.”

Stead is happy that Nicholls is back, even though he was initially not included in the squad.

“It’s nice to have a player of Henry’s calibre to call on,” Stead said.
“He has plenty of Test experience and covers a number of positions in our batting order.”

The Black Caps are waiting to find out if Conway can play in the second and final Test, beginning on March 8 in Christchurch.
