After weeks of speculation, it has been officially confirmed that South African fast bowler Morne Morkel has been appointed as India’s new bowling coach by the BCCI.
Morkel previously served as the bowling coach for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the IPL, where he collaborated closely with Gautam Gambhir, who was LSG’s mentor for the first two seasons.
Cricbuzz reported that BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirmed Morkel’s appointment. Morkel will begin his new role on September 1, with his first assignment being the upcoming home series against Bangladesh.
When Gautam Gambhir was appointed India’s head coach, he recommended certain individuals for the coaching staff, including Morkel. However, initial reports suggested that the Roger Binny-led BCCI was uncertain about Morkel and was considering other candidates.
For the recently concluded series against Sri Lanka, Sairaj Bahutule was brought in as the interim bowling coach for Team India.
Morkel’s coaching career includes a stint with Pakistan, where he served as their bowling coach during the 2023 World Cup, prior to joining India.
