Australia’s star all-rounder, Mitchell Marsh, has been ruled out of the upcoming Champions Trophy due to a persistent back injury, leaving his participation in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with Lucknow Super Giants in doubt. Cricket Australia (CA) confirmed that Marsh, who has dealt with fitness issues all season, will undergo an extended rehab period to address “ongoing lower back pain and dysfunction.”
“Mitchell Marsh has been ruled out of the upcoming ICC Men’s Champions Trophy with ongoing lower back pain and dysfunction,” CA stated.
The National Selection Panel and Australian men’s medical team made the decision to rule Marsh out, as his injury has not responded well enough to rehabilitation. His lower back pain flared up in recent weeks, prompting the panel to opt for a longer-term approach by allowing Marsh more time for recovery.
“Marsh will now undergo further rest and rehabilitation as part of his return to play plan. The NSP will meet to decide on a replacement for Marsh in due course,” CA added.
Marsh, who captains Australia’s T20I team and often stands in for Pat Cummins in ODIs, has had a challenging season leading up to his injury. He struggled during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, managing only 73 runs in seven innings and having limited impact with the ball. He was eventually dropped for the final Test against India in Sydney in favor of Beau Webster.
After playing just one match in the Big Bash League (BBL) on January 7, Marsh opted to withdraw from the rest of the tournament to focus on mental and physical recovery in preparation for the Champions Trophy. However, his back issues continued, leading to his withdrawal.

Who will replace Marsh?
With Marsh out, Australia will need to adjust their top-order lineup. Jake Fraser-McGurk, known for his aggressive style, could be a potential replacement, though his form has been inconsistent, having struggled against Pakistan earlier in the season and having a quiet BBL before finishing strong, according to ESPNCricinfo.
The squad already has solid batting depth, including backup wicketkeeper Alex Carey, but selectors may look to bring in an all-rounder to fill Marsh’s role. Options like Will Sutherland, who played ODIs last year, Webster, or spin-bowling all-rounder Cooper Connolly could be considered.
Australia’s leadership is also uncertain, as Pat Cummins is nursing an ankle injury from the India Tests. If he is ruled out, Steven Smith, Travis Head, or Josh Inglis could step in as ODI captain. Champions Trophy squads can be adjusted freely until February 11, after which any changes will require approval from the ICC’s technical committee. Australia will play two ODIs in Sri Lanka on February 12 and 14 as part of their preparations for the tournament.
