Meet Kamran Ghulam: The Rising All-Rounder Stepping In for Babar Azam

Kamran Ghulam is set to make his Test debut in Pakistan’s crucial second match against England in their home series. On the eve of the Multan Test, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) unveiled the lineup, introducing Ghulam as a replacement for the out-of-form Babar Azam, who has gone a year without a century. Here’s a closer look at the 29-year-old all-rounder’s journey to the national stage.

Kamran Ghulam’s Path to Test Cricket

Kamran’s career began on Pakistan’s domestic circuit when he debuted for the Abbottabad Falcons at just 17 during the 2013 Faysal Bank One Day Cup, immediately making an impact with two match-winning wickets. Later that year, he earned his first-class debut, followed by his selection for Pakistan’s U-19 squad for the 2014 U-19 Cricket World Cup. As an all-round talent, Ghulam helped Pakistan reach the final, where they fell short to South Africa.

In recent years, Kamran has been a standout performer in Pakistan’s domestic leagues. During the 2020-21 season, he set a record in the Qaid-e-Azam Trophy by scoring over 1,000 runs, a feat previously unmatched. Ghulam is also a three-time PSL champion, first with Islamabad United in 2016, and then winning back-to-back titles with Lahore Qalandars in 2022 and 2023 under Shaheen Afridi’s captaincy.

Ghulam made his international debut in an ODI against New Zealand in January 2023 as a concussion substitute for Haris Sohail. After a decade of dedication and 59 first-class matches, Ghulam has finally secured his Test cap, aiming to bring depth to Pakistan’s lineup as they strive to level the series against England.
